A table runner is a small change that makes a table feel considered. It introduces texture, defines the centre line, and helps protect the surface without hiding it completely. For coordinated settings, start with our table linen.

Linen and cotton table runners

Linen table runners have an easy drape and a tactile finish that suits relaxed meals and quieter entertaining. Cotton table runners feel smoother and press neatly, which works well if you prefer a crisp look. If you enjoy a more formal mood, layer a runner over table cloths to add depth while keeping the layout uncluttered.

Styling the table

Let the runner set the tone, then define each place setting with refined placemats and coasters. Finish with napkins and napkin rings for a balanced look that works for everyday dining and guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What length should a table runner be?

Allow the runner to drop 25cm to 30cm beyond each end of the table. As our Table Runners guide explains, runners typically sit between 30 and 45cm wide, covering around a third of the table's width. Our Camelia Linen Runner (handmade in Italy) is 50x170cm, which suits dining tables up to around 120cm long with the right drop. For longer tables, our wider table linen collection includes runners sized for six to twelve seaters. Measure your table first, then add 50cm to 60cm to the total length for the right drop.

Should a table runner match the tablecloth?

Not necessarily, and the table often looks better when it does not. A contrasting runner over a plain damask cloth adds layered interest; a tonal pairing reads as more formal. Our journal piece on mismatched placemats and table linen covers the principles in detail. Linen runners over our Irish Linen Single or Double Damask tablecloths is a pairing that holds up beautifully.

What material is best for a table runner?

Linen for natural texture and easy drape, cotton for crispness and everyday wear, and damask for formal occasions. Our Camelia 100% Linen Runner is handmade in Italy using the authentic Italian Renaissance hand printing technique with hand-carved pear tree wooden blocks; Woods is one of the UK's exclusive stockists. Our wider table runners collection focuses on linen and cotton, both of which press well, age beautifully and coordinate with our Irish Linen Damask tablecloths.

How do I iron a table runner without creasing it?

Iron while damp on the reverse side first, then turn and finish on the front for the cleanest result. For damask or embroidered runners, press over a thin cotton cloth to protect the pattern. Roll rather than fold for storage to avoid permanent crease lines, especially on heavier linen weaves.

Are table runners only for formal dining?

Far from it. A linen table runner brings shape and softness to an everyday kitchen table without committing to a full cloth, and our seasonal runners are one of the quickest ways to refresh a table for an occasion. Pair with our linen napkins for relaxed entertaining or layer over an Irish Linen Damask cloth for something more formal.

How do I store a table runner between uses?

Roll, do not fold. Folding creates crease lines that are hard to iron out of heavier linen and damask weaves, and over time the fold weakens the fabric. Roll into a cotton bag or tissue paper, store flat in a drawer, and keep away from direct sunlight to prevent yellowing on whites or fade on coloured runners.
