The Ultimate Guide to Bed Linen Styles

The Ultimate Guide to Bed Linen Styles

A beautifully styled bed is built, not bought. The difference between a bed that looks flat and one that looks like it belongs in an interiors magazine comes down to layering, colour discipline and a few finishing decisions. This guide walks through the method our designers use, layer by layer.

Build the Layers in Order

Start with a taut fitted sheet, then a flat sheet folded back over the duvet edge for that immaculate hotel turnback. The duvet itself sits square, with the cover ironed on the visible third only. Pillows stack from back to front: sleeping pillows in housewife cases behind, Oxford pillowcases in front for structure, then one or two decorative cushions at most. Finish with a bedspread or folded quilt across the foot. Everything underneath the decorative layer comes from our bedding collection, which covers duvets, pillows and toppers in one place.

Seasonal Looks

The core linen stays constant through the year; the top layers change. In summer, strip back to a light bedspread and swap heavier cushions for one linen pair. In autumn, add a wool throw and deepen the accent colour. In winter, layer a quilted bedspread over the duvet and bring in texture: velvet, cashmere, brushed cotton. In spring, lighten everything and let white lead again. Our bedspreads collection carries the seasonal top layer in every weight.

Mixing Brands with Confidence

The best dressed beds rarely come from a single range. A classic pairing is Peter Reed corded percale as the base, woven in Lancashire since 1861, with Yves Delorme adding the decorative layer, since its printed and embroidered pieces are designed to sit over plain foundations. Woods own Italian collections bridge the two, matching Peter Reed for crispness while offering softer sateens for the pillow stack. The rule is simple: one brand sets the foundation, another provides the flourish, and the palette holds them together. Compare all ranges side by side in our full bed linen collection.

Personal Styling Guidance for Your Bedroom

Styling advice lands differently when it is about your own room rather than a room in a photograph. Membership of the Heritage Partnership brings exactly that: personal guidance from our design led team in Harrogate, who can help you plan layers, palettes and seasonal changes around the bed you actually own. Members also see new collections in private preview and enjoy first access to decorative pieces, which is often where the finishing flourish for a scheme comes from.
