Make This Christmas Unforgettable with Woods Fine Linens

Make This Christmas Unforgettable with Woods Fine Linens

Nobody puts bed linen on a list. It is noticed every night for the next ten years all the same, which is roughly the case for everything in this guide.

What follows is a walk through the house rather than a list of products. The couple whose sheets have gone thin, the friend who hosts every Christmas, the parents who have not replaced a tablecloth since the nineties. Start with the room, and the gift tends to choose itself.

Start here if you want it monogrammed

This is the one thing on the page you cannot leave until December. We monogram towels, napkins and table linen, and we make tablecloths to the size of your actual table rather than the nearest standard one. Allow six to eight weeks, which means ordering by the end of October for Christmas.

It is also the only gift here that nobody else can give. A monogrammed set is not a better version of something bought elsewhere, it is a different object.

Monogramming suits napkins and hand towels particularly well, and a made to measure tablecloth is the strongest gift we offer anyone who hosts.

The bedroom

The most used gift in the house, and the one where quality shows fastest. Our own collections are 300 thread count single ply Egyptian cotton sateen, hand finished in Italy. We also stock Peter Reed, woven in Lancashire since 1861 and Royal Warrant holder to King Charles III.

Browse bed linen and Egyptian cotton bed linen, or use our bedding buyers guide to choose between percale and sateen.

Worth knowing. a credible thread count sits between 200 and 500. Anything advertised above 400, and certainly anything claiming 1,000, is usually counting plies rather than threads. If you are unsure of their mattress, buy the duvet cover set rather than fitted sheets, since depth varies.

The dining room

For anyone who does Christmas dinner properly. Irish linen is the benchmark, woven as single damask for everyday refinement or double damask for the heavier, more lustrous finish kept for occasions.

See tablecloths, napkins and napkin rings, or the table linen buyers guide.

Worth knowing. measure the table and add twice the drop you want. Allow 20 to 30cm each side for family meals and 35 to 40cm for formal dining, and err longer if in doubt, since a short cloth is the one mistake that cannot be hidden. Napkins want to be 45 to 50cm square so they sit on the lap rather than perch on it.

The kitchen

Our fine Irish linen glass cloths are the thing customers come back for more than almost anything else in the shop. Unglamorous on paper, and a proper linen cloth dries glassware without lint or streaks and keeps doing it for years. Woven in Northern Ireland exclusively for us, 58 x 75cm, with a centre stripe in red, blue, black or green. Singly, or as a mixed six pack for someone who entertains.

See the Irish linen glass cloths, or the wider kitchen linen collection.

The bathroom

The parts of a bathroom people put off replacing. A good cotton bath mat changes how the room feels more than the towels do, and it is exactly the sort of thing nobody buys for themselves at Christmas.

Browse bath mats.

Worth knowing. if you are buying towels rather than mats, they are covered properly in our gifts for him guide, where the weights and sizes are set out.

The children’s room

Keepsakes rather than toys, which is what tends to survive. Soft toys and embroidered handkerchiefs, chosen because they get kept in a drawer for thirty years rather than outgrown by February.

See children’s gifts.

If nothing quite fits

The honest answer for someone who has everything is not to spend more, it is to notice what has worn out. A linen glass cloth, a set of napkins, a proper bath mat. That is a harder gift to buy and a better one to receive.

A note on why these pieces

Since 1895 we have sold linen to households in Harrogate and well beyond it, often to the children of people who bought from us first. That is the test we apply to everything here: not whether it makes a good Christmas present, but whether it will still be in the house in twenty years.

If the gift is really for one person rather than the household, Christmas gifts for her goes category by category, and the Christmas collection holds everything seasonal in one place.

If you would like to hear from us occasionally, The Heritage Partnership is our mailing list. We use it for new arrivals, seasonal edits and the odd note that is genuinely useful, such as the last order dates before Christmas. It is free to join and easy to leave.
