Care Secrets: How to Preserve Your Luxury Table Linens and Avoid Pilling

A fine linen tablecloth is one of the few things in a home genuinely made to outlive its owner. Irish linen damask handed down through three generations is not a rarity; it is what the cloth was woven for. But longevity is a partnership between the weaver and the keeper, and most of the damage we see done to fine table linen happens not at the table but in the laundry and the cupboard. Here is how to keep tablecloths and napkins crisp, white and beautiful for decades: dealing with the two classic dinner-party accidents, washing and starching damask properly, ironing for that pressed sheen, and storing so the cloth comes out of the drawer as good as it went in.

Red wine: act quickly, gently, and without heat

The moment wine hits the cloth, blot. Press a clean white napkin or kitchen towel onto the stain to lift as much liquid as possible; never rub, which drives the pigment into the fibres and abrades the weave. Flush the area from behind with cold water, or lay the cloth over a bowl and pour cold water through the stain. A little white wine or soda water helps loosen what remains. When the meal is over, pre-treat with a gentle liquid detergent worked in with your fingertips and wash promptly at 40 degrees. The one unbreakable rule: no heat of any kind, neither hot water, tumble dryer nor iron, until the stain has gone completely. Heat cooks a wine stain into permanence.

Candle wax: freeze, lift, then draw out the residue

Resist picking at warm wax. Let it set hard, or speed it along by holding an ice cube in a plastic bag against it, then lift the brittle wax away with the edge of a blunt knife or a spoon. To remove the waxy shadow left in the weave, lay clean brown paper or blotting paper over and under the area and press with a warm, dry iron; the paper draws the melted residue out of the cloth. Move to fresh paper as it absorbs. If a coloured candle has left a tint behind, treat it as a stain with a gentle pre-wash treatment before laundering as usual.

Washing damask

Fine linen actually likes being washed; it grows softer and more lustrous with laundering, provided the washing is kind. Wash whites together at 40 degrees with a gentle detergent, and avoid optical brighteners on ivory or unbleached cloths, which push them towards an artificial blue-white. Never use chlorine bleach on linen; it weakens the fibre and yellows with time. For a dulled white, an oxygen-based stain remover used occasionally is as far as you should go. Give the cloth room in the drum rather than cramming it in, and shake it out flat the moment the cycle ends. Starching for the classic crisp finish

Damask's formal, sculptural quality comes half from the weave and half from starch. A light spray starch applied while ironing gives body and sheen for most occasions; for the full ceremonial finish, a traditional soak starch before drying produces the crisp, standing folds you see on the grandest tables. Starch is always optional and always temporary, it washes out entirely, so you can dress the same cloth formal for Christmas and relaxed for Sunday lunch. One caution: store linen unstarched wherever possible, as starch left in stored cloth attracts moisture and can encourage yellowing.

Iron while damp, always

The single best ironing secret for linen is timing. Take the cloth from the line or machine while it is still evenly damp, or re-dampen it with a water spray and roll it in a towel for twenty minutes, then iron on a hot setting. Press the reverse side first, then finish on the front to raise the damask pattern's sheen. Over embroidery or monograms, press through a thin cotton cloth to protect the raised work. Ironing bone-dry linen is a losing battle; ironing damp linen is close to effortless.

Storing without creases or yellowing

How you store table linen decides how it greets you next season. Roll rather than fold wherever you can; folding creates crease lines that press into the fibre, weaken it over years, and are stubborn to iron out of heavier damask. Roll cloths around a cardboard tube covered in acid-free tissue, or store flat in a drawer lined with tissue or a cotton bag. Never store linen in plastic, which traps moisture, and keep it away from direct sunlight and unpainted wood, both of which yellow white cloth. If a cloth must be folded, refold it along different lines once or twice a year. And always store linen completely clean; invisible traces of food, wine or starch are what become the mysterious yellow marks of next Christmas.
